The Rooibos, in Afrikaans meaning Red Bush, grows in South Africa’s fynbos biome in the Cedarberg, situated in the Western Cape province of South Africa. This fynbos region is known for its exceptional biodiversity. The leaves of the Rooibos are used to make a herbal tea of the same name which has been popular in Southern Africa for many generations and has gained popularity internationally. The tea contains no caffeine. The earliest records of the plant being used to brew tea, dates back to the early 19th century where the local inhabitants of the Cedarberg, would climb the mountains to harvest wild rooibos leaves. By the late 1920’s, demand for the tea had grown to such an extent, that the need arose to cultivate the plant commercially. Today the crop is still maintained as semi-wild.
